ENZYME NEWS

(The following are news articles and studies taken from modern research on enzymes. These reports were recorded with the permission of Global Health, publisher of the book, "Why Doctors Don't Guarantee Their Work")
NY Times Syndicate - The Washington Times, 4-8-2001 National Institute of Health/National Cancer Institute

MIND-BODY CANCER FIGHT
(ENZYMES CURE CANCER!)

"My weight dropped from 135 to 105. The doctors didnt' tell me but the medical reports said that I had six months to live," Mr. Rubin recalled.
Then he heard about Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, a New York City physician who was said to be successfully treating incurable cancers with an intensive program called the Gonzalez regimen - (a treatment of enzymes). "I was so wiped out that I was willing to try anything," Mr. Rubin says. His regular doctors had given up, but could this "crazy" stuff save his life?
It did. After six months, Mr. Rubin's weight was back up and his tumor had disappeared. The program is the result of Dr. Gonzalez's treasure hunts through forgotten conventional medical literature. In his second year of medical school, he came across the work of Dr. John Beard, a Scottish embryologist and biology professor at the University of Edinburgh who, in the early 1900s - injected the enzymes into animals with cancer and reported that the tumors just "popped off."
Dr. Beard used the enzymes to treat cancer in humans, achieving cures that were documented in medical journals and a 1911 book. After he died, Dr. Gonzalez says "various doctors, all considered crazy by the medical establishment, tried to carry on his work."
Dr. Gonzalez - opened a private practice in New York in 1987 and began treating cancer patients with his own - enzymes. Word soon spread of his reported successes. In 1993, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) asked him to present - case reports as a prelude to beginning controlled studies.
"So I showed them a woman whose breast cancer had spread to her brain and liver. She went on my regimen (of enzymes), and the cancers went away. I showed them several other cases of terminal cancer, all of which had gone into remisssion."
Impressed, the NCI (along with the - National Institutes of Health) awarded - a $1.4 million grant to conduct a study comparing Dr. Gonzalez's regimen to chemotherapy in treating pancreatic cancer patients, who normally have a grim prognosis.

"GENETIC DEFECT TIED TO PROSTATE CANCER"
Flaw Said to Hinder a Needed Enzyme

(Johns Hopkins School of Medicine "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences") The team found that in nearly all of the 91 prostate cancers studied, there was evidence of a genetic defect that blocked production of an enzyme that protects against cancer-causing substances in the environment.
The defect was not present in the prostate glands of healthy individuals. On the contrary, normal prostate tissue produced large amounts of the enzyme. Earlier studies have shown that production of similar enzymes is stimulated by consumption of "cruciferous" vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and Brussel sprouts.

Enzyme Could be Key to Arthritis Relief - USA Today

Enzymes are responsible for the functions of every organ. Vascular and circulatory disorders also respond well to enzyme supplementation. Former Fordham University of Medicine professor, Dr. Max Wolf reported that tests of 347 patients with circulatory disorders showed 87% either completely free or almost free of any symptoms after taking enzymes. Dr. H. Dench, Austrian Professor of Medicine, conducted similar tests of patients who had problems with blood clots. Ninety-three percent of the patients were significantly improved after enzyme treatments. A German scientist, Dr. Karl Maehder, reported that 216 patients suffering from various vein disorders were given oral enzymes. Their typical problems were edema and serious varicose veins. Ninety-four percent either completely recovered or showed significant improvement.
Dr. Joseph Weissman: "The extensive research and successful clinical tests of enzyme supplementation are certainly convincing proof that staying healthy may be relative to the amount of enzymes in our bodies."

"MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS: ENZYMES"
by Dr. D. Anthony Lopez

Supplementing your diet with enzymes can pay big health dividends. Enzymes are essential to life in all organisms, whether animal or plant, whether microscopic or the most complex human being. Why so important? They are the principal components of our defense systems, immune system, and of the cellular maintenance and tissue repair mechanisms of our bodies.
The Final Call, 8-30-95:
"THE DANGERS OF THE G6PD ENZYME DEFICIENCY"
G6PD is an enzyme, found functioning throughout all cells of the body, that is instrumental in the process of converting sugar to energy for the body's use. One function of G6PD is to protect red blood cells from harmful oxygen compounds . . . According to Dr. Cyril Moore of Morehouse College School of Medicine in Atlanta, these oxygen compounds . . . can be very dangerous if they are not eliminated. If they remain in the blood system, they eventually convert to hydrogen peroxide which kills red blood cells, rendering them useless in their function of carrying oxygen throughout the body. G6PD at proper levels plays a role in reducing these compounds to water.

"NATURAL REMEDIES"
by Dr. James Privitera

Enzyme therapy greatly accelerates tissue repair and wound healing.
Enzymes' stimulating effect on new tissue construction makes them a natural healing aid for other injuries. Anything that injures body tissue - burns, wounds, viruses - can cause inflammation, and enzymes can help. Wounds heal more rapidly, and with reduced scar formation. When you have an injury, (enzyme) supplements may be the best way to get the enzymes that will hasten the healing process.

"OUTSMART AIDS"
(Dr. Jon Kaiser, with the Wellness Center in the Conant Medical Group, has brought symptom-free health to hundreds of AIDS patients.)

Dr. Kaiser has gained international recognition by treating his (AIDS) patients with fresh fruits, vegetables, and enzyme supplements. He offers a new program that shifts the emphasis away from drugs toward natural therapies that raise the patients' own healing capacities. About three-quarters of his (AIDS) patients are continuously symptom-free.

"SCIENTISTS DISCOVER WAY TO PROLONG
LIFE Of CELLS"
Enzyme Seems to Put Aging on Hold

Scientists for the first time have used a natural chemical to dramatically increase the life spans of human cells in laboratory dishes and perhaps make them immortal, prompting a flood of speculation about the potential for slowing aging and extending human life.
"We found that biological aging can be put on hold," said Jerry W. Shay of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, who with Colleagues there and at Geron Corp., a California biotechnology company, released their results yesterday.
Each time a cell divides, its telomeres grow shorter. In youthful cells, an enzyme called telomerase (tel-LOM-er-ase) quickly rebuilds them. But in older cells that enzyme is absent. Without it, telomeres shrink with each cell division, in effect ticking off time like a molecular clock. Scientists have hypothesized for years that aging cells might be rejuvenated if they could be prodded to make telomerase again.

THERAPY COMBATS SICKLE CELL ANEMIA
Lab Test Restores Blood Cells' Shape

A new type of genetic therapy may provide a way to control sickle cell anemia, the painful, disabling disease that strikes many black people. Eight to 13 percent of Americans whose ancestors came from Africa or the Middle East carry at least one sickle cell gene.
In a laboratory experiment, Duke University scientists were able to change sickled blood cells into normal cells . . . In the Duke study, scientists created a ribozyme, a type of enzyme that can clip and correct the message carried in RNA . . . The ribozymes cut out the mutated instructions and replace them with the correct genetic pattern. The result: red blood cells that are normal.

FOR YOUR HEART: 3 B VITAMINS"

Harvard researcher Meir Stampfer estimates at least 150,000 heart attacks yearly are tied to homocysteine. Enzymes derived from B6, B12 and folic acid are essential in disposing of homocysteine; otherwise it builds up in the blood, harming arteries, leading to heart attacks, strokes and deaths.
AIDS - There are 33,000,000 people infected with HIV, worldwide (American Medical Association.) Dr. Jon Kaiser has gained international recognition by using fruits, vegetables, and enzyme supplements to bring patients with full-blown AIDS back to health. He has successfully treated more than 400 AIDS patients. Oxygen therapy also seems to be effective by improving the efficiency of enzymes, particularly those enzymes involved with attacking and inactivating viruses. And mainstream science can be added to the mix. By manipulating enzymes, especially protease, a class of drugs has proven to be "highly effective in knocking out the AIDS virus while allowing the immune system to recover." This drug called ABT-538 shuts off 99 percent of the AIDS virus's replication and is "10 times more effective than AZT in halting virus replication." (J. Kaiser, Outsmart AIDS, Natural Health, January-February, 1997/D. Ho of AIDS Research Ctr. & J. Leonard of Abbott Laboratories, Washington Post, 1-29-95/AIDS & Development, Awake, 4-8-95/American Medical Association Report, 1998/S. Krauss, O2XYGEN: Nature' Most Important Dietary Supplement,1999)

ALLERGIES result from low levels of enzymes, especially amylase, protease, and lipase, allowing food substances to accumulate in the blood. Dr. William Lintz eliminated allergy symptoms in 472 patients by eliminating the toxins in their bodies. In hundreds of other cases, enzyme supplements taken orally restored the body's enzyme level, dissolved undigested food particles, and eliminated a variety of allergic conditions including asthma, hay fever, eczema, headaches, vomiting, angioneurotic edema, colitis, and hives. (WL Lintz, Gastrointestinal Allergy, The Review of Gastroenterology, 1939/O. Zajicek, Therapy of Migraine in Women . . . ,1937/AW Algas, The Treatment of Food Allergy, 1936/E. Howell, Food Enzymes for Health & Longevity, 1994/WD Sansum, The Treatment of Indigestion, Underweight, and Allergy . . . , 1932)

ARTHRITIS - Dr. Anthony Bassler treated and observed 344 patients with arthritis and, along with British surgeon Sir Arbuthnot Lane, discovered that symptoms disappeared or lessened substantially with the cleaning up of the intestinal track, consequently increasing enzyme efficiency. In England, Dr. Arnold Renshaw's enzyme therapy resulted in either marked improvement or cures for more than 1500 arthritic patients. (A. Bassler, Aging, Arteriosclerosis, & Cardiac Conditions, Medical Record, 1-1-1941/WA Lane, Consequences & Treatment from a Surgical Point of View, British Medical Journal, 3-15-1913/A. Renshaw, Annals of Rheumatic Disease, 1947)

BLOOD disorders are effectively treated with oral enzymes, worldwide. Phlebitis, hypertension, blood clots, cholesterol buildup, arteriosclerosis, varicose veins, and leukemia are a few of the successfully treated conditions. This success is a result of the scavenger like quality of enzymes that patrol the blood stream to seek out and dissolve foreign substances. To prove the connection between enzymes and heart disease, Dr. J.E. Kirk conducted an exhaustive study covering 27,200 essays on 98 different enzymes. (D. Colbury, Controlling High Blood Pressure, Washington Post, 3-29-95/JE Kirk, Enzymes of the Arterial Wall, 1969/Langsjoen & Folkers, Isolated Diastolic Dysfunction of the Myocardium . . . , 1993/A. Lopez, Medical Breakthroughs: Enzymes, Journal of Longevity Research, 1995)

CANCER, like all disease, is preceded and preserved by low enzyme levels. So it seems logical to assume that cancer can be prevented or treated by increasing enzyme intake. Modern medical science is slowly coming around to this realization as evidenced by doctors at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 1994, they discovered that prostate cancer is induced by a missing enzyme that can be found in any cruciferous vegetable. Normally, humans carry 100 to 10,000 cancer cells floating around at all times. In a healthy immune system, enzymes destroy these cancer cells quickly before they are able to attach to an organ and grow. When the immune system lacks enzymes, these cells can attach, grow, and become malignant. (Washington Post, Prostate Cancer, 11-22-94, E. Howell, Enzyme Nutrition, 1985/Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, "cancer" & "tumors"/Michael Williams, The Herald News, 1995)

HERPES - In Central and South America, Europe, China, and Japan, herpes along with a host of viral diseases is now being eliminated or inactivated through the intake of enzyme supplements and oxygen. (A. Lopez, Medical Breakthroughs: Enzymes, Journal of Longevity Research, 1995/E. Howell, Enzyme Nutrition, 1985/Staff of Life, The Good Bacteria Story, 1994)

OBESITY - Lipase is an essential enzyme for anyone who is interested in losing weight because it naturally dissolves fat. Tufts University is one of many institutions that conducted tests showing obese people and fat tumors lacked lipase. (D. Galton, Tufts University, Herald News, 3-22-95/E. Howell, Food Enzymes for Health & Longevity, 1994)
